This item is from Rwanda and is likely dated to the early 1900s. It is a milk jug hand carved from mahogany by the Tutsi people, an ethnic group of the African Great Lakes region. This object is both utilitarian and beautiful. It primary purpose was to carry milk - and sometimes water or food. The best part of this object, other than the history it carries, is the repair work done with tin. The metal elements was the tradition approach to repairing the cracks in the wood. As it is antique and well used, it shows signs of age and wear. This jug measures 9.25 inches in height and has a base radius of 3.75 inches. It is a true treasure.
