BEYOND THE BACKGROUND

An edited and recorded version of a workshop originally held live via Facebook in 2021. Please note that as this was originally a Live Workshop on FB, there will be the comments, asides, pauses, blips, and bumps that come with a live event.

We all have dozens hundreds thousands of backgrounds made – in piles, in boxes and in drawers. Let’s face it…they are fun to make. But what comes next? What do you actually do with a background? This class will tackle that question through a series of makes, demos and discussions. This is not a traditional, project-based workshop where we focus on creating one piece of art during class time. Rather, we will be focused on reviewing approaches to going Beyond the Background, specifically with abstract art in mind. I will share with you ways of thinking and doing as we go through multiple options for going from background to completed art. With each approach, we will start with a new background and, using supplies that you are already likely to have, put the techniques in action.

This class is technically Part 2 of my 2020 class One Layer Away, where I shared my approach to creating layered and dynamic backgrounds. You do not have to have taken this earlier class but it is still available should you want to.

The Skinny

  • The workshop is hosted on YouTube.
  • The class includes 2 hours of instruction in one video
  • Cost of the workshop is $25USD.
  • There are no refunds once registered.
  • Once you complete your purchase, you will receive an email (from either Seth Apter or Janene Kalb and usually within 24 hours of registering) that includes a direct link to the workshop.
  • The supply list can be found in three places: in this listing, in the PDF you will receive a link to when you register, and in the instructional email.
  • Please do not share the workshop link as it is meant only for paid participants.
