Double Jointed

An edited and recorded version on a workshop originally held live via Zoom in June 2024.

Go in many different directions in Double Jointed. This edited recording of a workshop initially held live on Zoom, focuses on book arts and mixed media. Consider this class a twofer. Together we create a single book structure that houses two separate books. No previous book binding experience is necessary to join as the step-by-step instructions can be easily followed. But wait there is more. We will be exploring a variety of mixed media techniques and supplies to fill the pages of our books. These include painting and inking, gel printing, collaging, stamping, stenciling, mark making, and more. You know. The works.

The supply list can be found at the end of this description.

The Skinny

  • The workshop is hosted on YouTube.
  • The class includes nearly 4 hours of instruction, broken down into 10 videos.
  • Please note that this is a recording of a live online class and, as such, there may be references to questions asked and comments made by participants.
  • Cost of the workshop is $110USD via PayPal only. Your PayPal receipt is considered confirmation that you registered.
  • There are no refunds once registered.
  • Once you complete your purchase, you will receive an email (from either Seth Apter or Janene Kalb and usually within 24 hours of registering) that includes a PDF in the form of an email attachment that includes the same supply list as printed below as well as instructions on how to access the workshop.
  • Please do not share the workshop link as it is meant only for paid participants.

The Supply List:

My book measures approximately 5 x 5 inches when closed and all measurements included in this supply list and described in the workshop will be based on that. You can choose to make your book smaller or larger but you will need to adjust all other dimensions.

-Paper for book cover and pages. I am using 8.5 x 11 inch sheets of heavyweight (about 140lb) watercolor paper and handmade and dyed cotton rag paper. You can use any type of paper as long as your choice is sturdy. Please do not cut your paper “to size” in advance of the workshop. We will do that together.

-Collage material. Anything goes… watercolor, card stock, velum, deli paper, transparencies, washi tape, vintage book pages, gelli plate papers, found paper, tissue, handmade paper, commercial rub-ons, decorated/scrapbook paper, etc.

-Cover material. We do not “design” the cover in the workshop but I went simple for my sample cover - paper, thread, and a wilted leaf as the embellishment. But you can go in any direction using your choice of lightweight embellishments.

-Water container and paint palette

-Gel plate and brayer

-Acrylic paint. I am using PaperArtsy Fresco Finish Chalk Acrylics as these will keep your book pages from sticking together. If you use other types of acrylic paint, please have wax or parchment paper on hand to place between your pages so that they do not stick.

-Paint brushes for gluing. I will be using inexpensive chip brushes.

-Dye spray. I am using Aladine Izink Dye Spray.

-Adhesive. I am using PVA and glue stick (recommended brands include Avery, UHU, and Coccinella). You could also use Matte Medium but remember that some of our supplies are not permanent and could “move” if you do so.

-Ink pads. Have multiple types on hand for more options. I will be using a combination of dye ink (Ranger Tim Holtz Distress), hybrid ink (The Moon and the Maker), and oil based ink (Shachihata Iromoyo Warabe).

-Needle and thread. I will be using waxed linen. Having wax for your thread is very helpful as we are sewing through paper.

-Scissors and/or craft knife and cutting mat

-Ruler

-Awl or pokey tool

-Favorite stamps and stencils. Remember we are working small when you consider size and scale.

-Favorite mark makers - permanent or water soluble. I will be using Stabilo All Pencils, Marabu Art Crayons, and Tim Holtz Watercolor Pencils

-Smooth craft/makeup sponges

-Fabric Strips. Have a few options available that measure about 12 x 4 inches (could be a bit smaller or larger). This is optional but will add layers and a fresh dimension to your book if you choose to use.

-Bone Folder. Optional and helpful but not necessary.
