The Lowdown
Mixed Media Mechanics is a series of 12 workshops that focus on many of the techniques that are the basis for mixed media art. Think of these classes as back to basics - although they are geared equally toward beginners and seasoned pros. In addition to the specific technique, every session also includes a brief, unique warm-up exercise that you can easily incorporate into your own practice.
The Mark Making class was held Live in August 2023. This is an edited and recorded version.
As artists, we all want to make our mark – both literally and figuratively. In this workshop, we focus on how to do that. Mark making is a key tool used to make your mixed media art your own. But while the process can be exciting and liberating, many makers find it daunting and are hesitant to go for it for fear of ruining their work. Together we will work to bring the joy to mark making. Our focus will be in discovering the marks that are meaningful to you, making the process more intuitive and loose, helping you become more confident and less anxious in the process, and exploring both materials and techniques to enhance your skills.
Part 1 of the class will include a review and demo of the basics. You can work alongside me as I demo a variety of mediums/supplies and techniques. We will also do a series of exercises aimed at exploring your own mark making language and easing you into making marks with abandon. In Part 2, we will work side by side, utilizing these approaches to create collage material and finished art.

SUPPLY LIST
If you would like to work along with me, please have the following on hand. But please know that you can feel free to substitute if you do not have exactly what is on the list. Please note that I will also use a number of other products that you may or may not have. If you do, you can grab them at class time. If you do not, you can always get them later if you like.
Substrate: Please have a stack of printer paper which we will be using in Part 1 of the workshop. For Part 2, bring a selection of paper surfaces that you typically work with that already have backgrounds. For example, you can use painted papers, gel printed papers, decorative or scrapbook paper, book pages, ephemera, etc. Really anything goes but it would be good to have a selection of different papers on hand.
Mark Making Tools - traditional: Bring your favorites as these are the ones you are most likely to use after the workshop ends. You can also bring tools that you have bought but never used. These could be: graphite pencils, watercolor pencils, gel pens, paint pens, markers, crayons, china marker, ink-filled waterbrush, pastels, etc.
Mark Making Tools – non-traditional: Bring anything that you use or might use to make a mark: straw, chopstick, twig, brush, bottle top, textured sponge, eraser, cotton swab, textured material, etc. Anything goes.
Unmounted Stamps: Bring your favorites
Ink Pads: bring your favorites which could include dye-based (such as Distress), permanent (such as StazOn or Archival), and hybrid (The Moon and The Maker)
Acrylic Paint: a few of your favorite colors
Ink: a few of your favorite colors - any type in a bottle and/or sprayer Paintbrush (various sizes), water cup, and palette
