The Lowdown
Mixed Media Mechanics is a series of 12 workshops that focus on many of the techniques that are the basis for mixed media art. Think of these classes as back to basics - although they are geared equally toward beginners and seasoned pros.
The Rusting & Dyeing class was held Live in January 2024. This is an edited and recorded version.
Mixed media is all about changing surfaces. There is nothing quite like the magic of seeing a surface morph right before your eyes. In this 1-hour 45-minute workshop we will work with two specific commercial products to create incredible surfaces through rusting or dyeing. The class is all about learning the ins and outs of the products, experimenting with different approaches and surfaces, and discovering ways to use these techniques to enhance your mixed media work.
Please note that the main products used in this workshop have a strong odor that will linger. If you are working inside, please use a mask and have adequate ventilation. You can always watch the class and then follow the instructions outside at a later time.

The Supply List
If you would like to work along with me, please have the following on hand. If you do not have all the supplies or prefer to watch and work later, please simply sit back and take it all in.
Please note that there are two specific products that I will be using that are necessary to have in order to make the process work: PaperArtsy Rusting Powder and Yamato Indigo Dye. They are both available in my online shop but if I am sold out, I can provide links to other vendors.
Please note that we will be working the surfaces of quite a few items so that you should be prepared in advance in your space with covered and protected surfaces to place these items down as they dry.
Supplies For Rusting
-Substrates: Choose an array of paper (for example plain watercolor paper, vintage book pages, painted backgrounds, handmade specialty paper, etc.), fabric scraps, metal objects, small glass bottle, plastic trinkets, etc. Basically, anything goes and you can grab other substrates in your space when you see what I am doing in the workshop.
-PaperArtsy Rusting Powder (must be this brand for our process)
-Metal Baking Tray/Sheet Pan
-Vinegar in a Spray Bottle (I am using white vinegar but any will work) -Matte Medium
-Embossing Pad
-Stencil
-Stamp
-Brush (chip/glue brush and small paint brush) -Palette Knife
-Awl or Push Pin
-Mask
-Baby Wipes
Supplies For Dyeing
-Substrate – Any natural fiber will work. I will focus on cotton fabric and watercolor paper. -Yamato Natural Blend Indigo Powdered Dye (must be this brand for our process)
-Gloves (I am using rubber cleaning gloves)
-Bowl that will hold about 2 liters of water
-Second bowl or container of water to briefly soak dyed fabric
-Tap Water
-Stirring Spoon (I am using a wooden spatula)
-Metal Baking Tray/Sheet Pan (or other surface that will hold the wet, dyed material) -Cleaning cloth or paper towel
